Greener process at lower cost. Our unique photocatalysis technology provides a solution to decarbonize the chemical industry by using light to efficiently upcycle CO2 into value-added products. By consuming more CO2 than emitted by the process, our technology creates carbon-negative commodity chemicals. Target applications are selected because they consume CO2 and because the co-feedstocks enabled by the new methods provide significant cost advantage. Since raw materials are the main cost driver of commodity chemicals, our technology delivers green products at significantly lower cost than today’s thermal methods.

Commodity chemical applications. Our initial target applications include (a) production of carboxylic acids using CO2 as feedstock; notably, for every ton of carboxylic acid, > 0.5 tons of CO2 will be sequestered by the product, (b) production of alcohols/ ketones directly from alkanes; bypassing energy intensive chemical intermediates and lowering life-cycle carbon emissions of downstream products. Our platform can support many other carbon-negative and low-carbon applications, adding to the CO2 reductions ultimately delivered by this technology.
Our platform is based on photocatalysis, a powerful new chemical technology that harnesses light energy to promote chemical reactions via fundamentally different mechanisms. Photocatalysis enables access to unique electron/energy transfer reaction pathways unattainable by today’s thermal methods leading to unprecedented efficiencies in chemical production from greener and lower-cost feedstocks (e.g., CO2), fewer process steps, and ambient vs. high-temperature (e.g., 500oC) operating conditions.
